Privetie also serves as the Region VI director for North Carolina Bap ‘Depression’ is sermon topic Pastor Wayne Trexler will speak on 'Handling Depression' (Psalm 42:5 6) during the 11 a.m. worship service at Southport Baptist Church this Sun day, June 20. Choral music will be “Does Jesus Care?' The Ordinance of the Lord’s Supper will be observed during the 7 pm chapel vespers. Nursery care and "children’s church" are provided. ‘Thank God for Jesus’ topic Saint Peter Lutheran Church will have as the sermon topic "Thank God for Jesus" at the 10 a.m. worship service Sunday, June 20. Using the lectionaiy text of Matthew 9:9-13, Jesus eating with sinners, pastor Charles McManus will state that Jesus was right where God wanted Him and because of the cross and resurrection, Jesus today is still in the midst of sinners. The Sacrament of Holy Communion will be celebrated at this service. ‘Summer Blast-Off5 tonight Activities for children and youths at First Baptist Church of Boiling Spring Lakes will begin with a "Summer Blast-OfF tonight (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. in the church fellowship hall. After a pizza party, some of the activities will include games, fellowship and devotionals. This is the first of several scheduled events for the sum mer. Activities will continue each Wednesday night, and other announced times, through August 4. ‘New beginning’ is the topic "Let Something New Begin" is the title of the sermon to be delivered by Dr. W. How does the Christian faith enable the "hew creation" ^promised in the text? Obituaries Charles Jack Moore Sr., 81, of Hamlet Charles Jack Moore Sr., 81,of Hamletdied Sunday, June 13,1993. Services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Fellowship United Methodist Church in Hamlet with the Rev. Jim Bailey and the Rev. Ben Sharpe officiating. Burial was held at Richmond Memorial Park. Moore was bom September 20, 1911, in Holly Springs, the son of Charles Thomas Moore and Margaret Collins. He was a self-employed building contractor, served on the Hamlet City Council and was a charter member of the Fellowship United Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Benny (Linda) Sharpe of Rocking ham; a son, Charles Jack Moore Jr. of Richmond, Va.; a brother, J. C. Moore of Yaupon Beach; a sister, Mrs. Alone Rhodes of Gamer, nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. James D. Ward, 82, of Southport James Durias Ward, 82, of Southport died Saturday, June 12,1993, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Southport Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Wayne Trexler officiating. Entombment followed in Cape Fear Memorial Park Mausoleum. Serving as pallbearers were O. W. Carrier, D. V. Jones, Wayne Ludlum, Douglas Pait, Hugh Price and Gene Russ. Members of the Men’s Sunday School Class served as honorary pallbearers. Ward was bom April 2,1911, in Longwood, son of the late Brooks and Ellen Butler Ward, and had lived here 57 years. He was retired fire boat chief engineer at Sunny Point and was in the appliance service business for 36 years. He was a member of National Association of Retired Federal Employees and in the 1930s was a member of the CCC. Ward was a lifetime deacon of Southport Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Gertha Jenrette Ward of the home; two daughters. Omega Harrison of Long Beach and Joyce Caffee of Leland; two sons, Charlie E. Ward of Marshvtlle and Roger C. Ward of Southport; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, James H. and Norman Shields Ward. Memorial contributions may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, The Leukemia Foundation or Southport Baptist Church Building Fund. A Peacock-Newman service. list Men. Pari-mutuel gambling initia tives have passed a Senate panel, but the House bill is deadlocked in the House Agriculture Committee. Privette, a native of Statesville, is a former four-term House member who represented Cabarrus, Stanly and Union counties in the 34th House District. He attended Wake Forest University and is a retired colonel from the U. S. Army Reserves with 34 years of military service. He was awarded a master of divinity degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Prior to assuming his current posi tion he served two terms as presi dent of the Baptist State Convention and was pastor of the North Kan napolis Baptist Church, Kannapolis, for IS years. For eight years he has represented North Carolina Baptists on the Christian Life Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. Moore to head youth program Steve Moore of Wilmington will serve as the summer youth worker for the First Baptist Church of Boil' ing Spring Lakes. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and is employed by the Brunswick County Board of Education as a teacher. Me plans an full schedule of events, urncd primarily at older children did youths. "The purpose of this ministry is to fill the idle hours of summer with creative and meaningful events," a church release stated. "All are wel come to participate." Personal counsel Trained volunteer counselors are available to help area residents and visitors cope with life adjustment problems through the Southport-Oak Island Personal Counseling Service. Appointments can be made by calling 457-0012. Counseling ses sions are conducted at St Peter Lutheran Church on N. C. 211 out side Southport. Clients are charged a minimal fee of $10, but no one is turned away because of inability to pay. The staff includes clergy, profes sional counselors and paraprofes sknals. Counseling and referral ser vices are offered to help people deal more effectively with problems and issues in their life.
